Single Sheet. “Music this week is again by the Workshop’s houseband, the Pierre Rochon/Bob McDonald Quintet, with trombonist Patrick LaNier, bassist Frank Vojcek, & drummer Ronald Johnson. Pierre is the trumpeter, Bob plays piano. The Detroit Contemporary 5, the Workshop’s first houseband, will play the 2nd set of the afternoon, after the readings. The group comprises Charles Moore, cornet; Brent Majors, saxophone; Hach Grjegian; vibes; John Dana, bass; & Danny Spencer, drums. Both groups will play at the Michigan State University Union Board Jazz Show Feb. 16 (Tuesday). Rob English, the original guitarist with the Detroit Contemporary 5, will rejoin the group for the concert, which will be held at the MSU Kellogg Center. This broadside program outlines all those in attendance and the nature of their performance, as well as outlining future programs and events that the Workshop is holding. Listed to perform at this particular event are: the Pierre Rochon/Bob McDonald Quintet & Detroit Contemporary 5 (as quoted above); Jean Rosenbaum (b. 1927) psychoanalyst and poet; Veryl Blatt, prolific poet and member of the Artists’ Workshop; Jessica Swain, poet, writer and (at the time) student at Wayne State University; and Howard Weingarden (1942-2011) and his one-man show; as well as assuredly many more impromptu performances by those in attendance. Updates to the Workshop's classes on jazz studying the work of John Coltrane and on poetry studying Charles Olson are provided. Also featured is plans for the next few events planned by the Artists’ Workshop including a series of public reading featuring the likes of Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, Michael McClure, and Diane di Prima, among many others, which you can read more about by checking out item #8075. Lastly, the program features a plea by the DAW for the continued support of Jazz in Detroit, ½ Pint’s bar and the DAW itself.
