Original Photograph: John Sinclair with Charles Moore (1965)
N/P: Robin Eichele, 1965. Original Photograph. Single Sheet. “Ted Nugent is an asshole. He always was." (quote, John Sinclair). An original black & white photographic print (measuring appx. 11" x 8.5" incl. margin) titled "Motorcycle Studies" featuring John Sinclair (1941-2024) the American poet, writer, and political activist from Flint, Michigan and Charles Moore (1951-2024), the American poet, flugelhornist, and doctor of ethnomusicology, with a Triumph Cafe Rider. Together, Sinclair and Moore (with others) would founded the Detroit Artist Workshop/Trans-Love Energies, a Sex-Love-and-Rock & Roll commune and incubator for the White Panther Party originated in Detroit that eventually moved to Ann Arbor, becoming an iconic stalwart of the city, ultimately responsible for the legalization of cannabis in Michigan. The duo was also heavily involved with Detroit's own MC5 (Motor City Five), one of the greatest hard rock bands of all time, with Sinclair acting as manager and Moore contributing his fluegelhorn skills. MC5's leftist political ties, anti-establishment lyrics and loud, energetic style of back-to-basics rock & roll including elements of garage rock, hard rock, blues rock, and psychedelic rock, basically invented punk rock. Moore wears a smock while Sinclair wears a polo shirt and blazer (a la our proprietor Arthur Nusbaum), but what are they discussing? A sale between two friends? A friend admiring another friend's new hog? The political and economic state of the world and fine leather seats? We may never know, but the fun is the pondering of it all. From the collection of scholar, poet and our dear friend Robin Eichele (b. 1941), noted Mimeograph Revolutionary, photographer & co-founder of the Detroit Artists' Workshop with the late, great John Sinclair and Charles Moore. On verso of this item are two identifying labels on the right and left bottom corners of print near edge, which identify Sinclair and Moore, as well as Eichele being the photographer ("Eichleay" is a misspelling of Robin's name, verified by the correct spelling of his name directly above the incorrectly spelled name). An outstandingly collectible relic in its singularly rarest contemporary form, with distinguished & ultimately relevant provenance. In relatively very fine condition with only the slightest rubbing & faint scratching to glossy recto; a few miniscule bumps at edges & corners; a touch of rubbing, age-toning & occasional spotting to verso. Very Fine. [Item #8163]
