Capilano Review No. 6 (Fall 1974)

North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada: The Capilano Review, 1974. First Printing. Softcover. “Fluid as music we pass through, / and return, bringing ancestors / to this new place: / our childhoods merging, melting. / The map’s divisions snarl, breaking / as we pass effortlessly through. / The continent takes us on / and begins to dream us: / worlds shading into worlds. / What integrity in our bones’ structure?-- / the right language dispels it. / Rituals seek to enter us / as if the body were a sacred place.”--Joyce Carol Oates, “Fertilizing the Continent,” pg. 74. Established in 1972, The Capilano Review has been publishing contemporary, experimental poetry and social/cultural commentary. Founded and edited by Pierre Coupey (b. 1942), Canadian painter, The Capilano Review was a bi-annual publication and each issue featured both new rising voices in poetry, as well as literary giants. Offered today is The Capilano Review No. 6, Fall 1974, the second issue of that year. This issue features: “Two Prose Pieces,” & “Four Poems” by Maxine Gadd (b. 1940), English novelist and poet; A series of black & white surreal photographs titled “Life Style Art” by Gathie Falk (b. 1927) Canadian painter, sculptor, and photographer; “Four Mini-Fictions” by John Lowry, New York writer; the poem “Inhaling Light,” by Douglas Blazek (b. 1941), Polish-American poet and one of the founders of the mimeo revolution; “Fertilizing the Continent” (as quoted above) by Joyce Carol Oates (b. 1938) the ineffable American writer, poet, essayist and short-story writer; and “Origin,” “Luck Unluck One Luck,” and “The Metaphysics of Light” by Robin Blaser (1925-2009) noted Canadian-American poet, editor and essayist, among many other great contributors and contributions! From the collection of Albert Glover (b. 1942), the great American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher who is the foremost living authority on literary (and literal) giant Charles Olson (our favorite Maximus Obscurantist), with whom we’re honored to be acquainted. Trade-format softcover, first & presumably only printing.
