Cups (Writing 17, 1968)

San Francisco, CA: Four Seasons Foundation, 1968. Limited First Edition. “Inside I brought | willows, the tips | bursting, | blue | iris (I forget | the legend of longlife | they represent) | and the branch of pepper tree | whose pink seeds | lack the passion of most fruits.” (Opening of Cups) This entry in the “Writing” series is by American-Canadian poet, translator & opera composer Robin Blaser (1925-2009). Don Allen, who edited the famous Grove Press anthology, "The New American Poetry, 1945-1960," founded the Four Seasons Foundation which put out the series of small-format chapbooks that were judiciously-edited “samplers” featuring the work of one or more authors Allen’s FSF sought to spotlight. This copy of Cups comes from the collection of Albert Glover (b. 1942), the great American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher who is the foremost living authority on the literary giant Charles Olson (our favorite Maximus Obscurantist), with whom we're honored to be acquainted. The first piece in the series was by Charles Olson [see item 6604]. Also, Blaser is the author of the tenth number in the Glover-published “A Curriculum of the Soul” series, “Bach’s Belief.” [See our item 8141}. The series was inspired & suggested by Olson. Chapbook in stapled wrappers. Limited edition of 1,000 copies as noted at colophon. In Fine condition with some rubbing and scratching to front, back covers & stapled spine; moderate creasing to edges & corners of same with a small closed tear to spine at upper edge/corner. Interior Very Fine with only the slightest of creasing to corners of leaves. Fine. [Item #8171]
