Mid-American Chants
West Newbury, MA: Frontier Press, 1972. First Edition Thus. Softcover. A book of poems by Sherwood Anderson (1876-1941), one of only two by the author of Winesburg, Ohio and the F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) favorite, Many Marriages. This work, published in 1918, is heavily influenced by Walt Whitman (1819-1892), and was considered something of a cult classic to writers affiliated with the New American Poetry. It’s likely that writers of the Mimeograph Revolution became aware of the work through its republishing (in 1964) by Charles Olson [1910-1970] associate, Jonathan Williams of Jargon & the Nantahala Foundation. At any rate, in our own era, this is an unheralded classic: so do yourself a favor and rediscover the Mid-American Chants. Large-format softcover in previous owner’s protective wrapping: a First Edition Thus published in 1972 by Harvey Brown’s Frontier Press. From the collection of Albert Glover (b. 1942), the acclaimed American poet, author, bibliographer, editor & publisher whom we're honored to be acquainted with, & who is the foremost living authority on Charles Olson [1910-1970], the canonical American poet among the most Gigantic (literally & literarily) men-of-letters of the twentieth century—our favorite Maximus Obscurantist. Glover studied with & was anointed by the Maximus Master himself, & has outstandingly served as his bibliographer & editor (see for example our item No. 8126). In (presumably) fine condition with only moderate shelf-wear, light bumping to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers & spine-edge. Glover wrapped this in a homemade protective covering sometime during the 1970s and didn’t open it up again, it seems. Covering in very fine condition with small tear at upper mid-near cover. Very Fine / Very Fine. [Item #8191]
