Framed Broadside: Smoke Writing (for Albert Glover)
Storrs, CN: University of Connecticut Library, 1973. Limited First Edition. “once in khairouan, south of tunis, a yellow kabyl dog | bit me! it was the first time in my life, & i decided | that he was right. he was simply expressing, in his | own way, that i was in the wrong.” (smoke writing, second stanza, Ansem Hollo) Appointed as the anti-Poet Laureate in 2001 by peers in protest of banal poetry, Anselm Hollo was an award-winning Finnish-born poet & translator who at one time taught at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado (co-founded by Allen Ginsberg & Anne Waldman). Offered here is a unique version of his “smoke writing (for albert glover),” which was published in a limited edition with a single sheet folded three times to create 8 pages. This version, owned by the titular Albert Glover (b. 1942), lays the sheet out without the folds so that the cover and three panels of poems are presented singularly in a horizontal format. Glover was given the piece by George Butterick, a fellow Olson scholar and a longtime curator at the University of Connecticut archives. As such, we presume this to be part of the limited edition run from the University of Connecticut Library. A unique post-modern piece of poetry greatly enriched by unique provenance, as it was owned by the namesake of the poem. Framed single sheet broadside. Measures 37 ¼” by 14 5/8”, with the frame about 6/8” wide. From the collection of Albert Glover, the acclaimed American poet, author, bibliographer, editor & publisher whom we're honored to be acquainted with, & who is the foremost living authority on Charles Olson [1910-1970], the canonical American poet among the most Gigantic (literally & literarily) men-of-letters of the twentieth century—our favorite Maximus Obscurantist. Glover studied with & was anointed by the Maximus Master himself, & has outstandingly served as his bibliographer & editor (see for example our item No. 8126). In Fine condition with some light scuffing and scratching to frame; minor separation of glass front to top of frame. There appears to be some light scuffing and scratching to single sheet.
