Yo Soy el Otro/ I Am the Other
Mexico City, Mexico: Plumed Horn Editions, 1965. “delirium of the bird that devours my heart, | heart that resounds, imprisoned, in dark galleries | denied the light of your eyes, | delirium of knives opening my entrails, | chamber of larva and Spanish fly. | delirium of young girls signing in the | sea’s eye, tireless sea that gnaws at my chest, | delirious chest maimed by the mast | that holds me:” (From Delirium, first stanza, p. 9, Sergio Mondragon) This is the first book by Sergio Mondragon, the Mexican poet and editor. El Corno Emplumado / The Plumed Horn was published as a bilingual quarterly focused on Beat poetry from 1962 through 1969 by Mondragon with his wife and co-editor Margaret Randall. They published 11 books under the Colección acuario (Aquarius Collection); this piece is Vol. V. The Plumed Horn was forced to close after taking a stand in support of Mexico’s 1968 student movement. As The Plumed Horn was a bilingual publisher, this title is in both English and Spanish. Illustrations for this book were done by Arnold Belkin, a Canadian-Mexican muralist, continuing the series’ tradition of using left-wing muralists for the artwork. The translation was done by Randall. For another piecefrom Colección acuario (Aquarius Collection); see Item #8037.
