Archive of St. Lawrence University Writings on Gary Snyder

Canton, NY: Saint Lawrence University, c. 1980s-1990s. Loose Sheets. A series of published and unpublished scholarly materials regarding Gary Snyder (b. 1930), the canonical Beat Generation/San Francisco Renaissance-&-Beyond American poet & environmentalist who is still with us & active as of this writing at age 95, & whose works have been enshrined in the Library of America series. This lot includes, among other things, an essay by one Theodosia H. Grayson of St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, titled [1] “Gary Snyder: Philosophies of Zen Buddhism and Native American Indian Cultures,” and a then-in-progress work of reference literature by Brad Buchanan, titled [2] “A Working Bibliography of Critical Response to the Writings of Gary Snyder (1966-1984).” Also present is [3] Ling Chung’s essay, “Whose Mountain is This? Gary Snyder’s Translation of Han Shan”; [4] a xerox copy of an essay titled “Zen and the Title of Gary Snyder’s ‘Marin-an” [sic] initially published in a May 1980 issue of Notes on Contemporary Literature; and [5] an A5-sized printout, pasted onto letter-sized paper, of Lee Bartlett’s [b. 1950] “Gary Snyder’s Myths and Texts and the Monomyth.” A great opportunity to look at mostly unseen & interesting work by underrepresented Snyder scholars. Published and unpublished literary scholarship in stapled, as well as loose sheets: printed, xeroxed, or otherwise assembled by Albert Glover [b. 1942] in the Saint Lawrence University folder pictured in the images attached to this listing. All works in generally Near Fine-Fine condition with only mild-to-moderate edge-wear, and a few exhibits of creasing, light bumping, & artifacts similar present variously throughout; some rusting, bleeding to area surrounding where paper clips were previously located; otherwise, generally clean. Near Fine-Fine. [Item #8337]
