Nine Panel Grid No. 2 (August 1994)

London, England, UK: Nine Panel Grid, 1994. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. “WOMAN WANTED: Man age 49. Divorced. Wants to meet women for marriage. Should be 35-44. Like television and motion pictures. Good food. I am a cost accountant, reliably employed. Money in bank. I like women to be on the fat side. Call 845 8973.” (From Loneliness, Charles Bukowski, p. 12) James Pyman is a British pencil and ink artist and scholar whose research focuses on British newspaper comic strips. “My own artwork examines how identity is defined by social circumstance, geography and popular culture,” he says of himself in a staff biography for the Open College of the Arts. “Much of the inspiration comes from the British landscape and, more importantly, the British mindscape.” This number of his Nine Panel Grid includes two illustrated stories: “Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. Part Two: The Journey” written and illustrated by Pyman, and “Loneliness,” a short story by Charles Bukowski first published in 1973 for his South of No North collection and illustrated by Pyman for this piece. In Loneliness, a woman responds to a man’s personal ad on his car and meets him for a drink at his house, where he attempts to assault her. (Debritto, D45, p. 486). Magazine-format comic in stapled wrappers. First Edition though not explicated at copyright page.
