You and Your Big Mouth: Cartoons by Pat Moriarity (No. 4, August 1994)
Seattle, WA: Fantagraphics Books, 1994. First Edition, First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. "In the years that followed, Jesse drifted in and | out of jails and nuthouses. He experimented with | transvestism...heroin...and alcohol abuse." (excerpt "Grunge Father," panel 7). In You and Your Big Mouth (aka "Big Mouth"), indie cartoonist Pat Moriarity draws short tales by guest writers, most of whom are also alt-comix creators. This issue includes Charles Bukowski (1920-1994), Henry Rollins (b. 1961), James Sturm (b. 1965), Dennis Eichhorn (1945-2015), David Collier, and Scott Nybakken. Moriarity is often compared to noted cartoonist, R. Crumb (b. 1943; see Item No.s 2164, 2207, 4272 et al), but while both grew from the same underground comix soil, their sensibilities couldn’t be more distinct. Moriarity's work carries his own rhythm and bite, a mix of dark humor and empathy that makes his art instantly recognizable. This fourth number of the neo-underground comix compendium features "Stone Tiger Frozen Sea" written by the aforementioned Bukowski, the great American cult-favorite poet-denizen of the dive bar & the racetrack, drawn in full color on the back cover by Moriarity. "Stone Tiger Frozen Sea" was infamously posthumously re-titled "Like a Dolphin" by editors of a volume of his poetry, which is obscenely bizarre because the poem itself depicts someone spending time locked away in a cell. We can guarantee this is the accurate depiction of Bukowksi's original intent, originally published in Hype magazine in 1992 (Debritto B1778, pg. 408). See our vast Bukowski collection, including Item No.s 7102, 8310, 8314 et al. for more. Comic Book in Stapled Wrappers: presumed first edition/ first-&-only printing with no references to further printings at copyright-contents page (inner front cover). A desirable & goofily rewarding collectible for "Mature Readers" (front cover), in its singularly rarest contemporary form, of especial interest to the Bukowski completist collector. In relatively quite very fine condition with only a touch of rubbing, faint scratching to front, back covers & stapled spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; staples just beginning to rust at exterior with no discernable exterior or interior bleeding; mild age-toning to text block. Interior very fine with only a hint of age-toning chiefly at blank margins/edges of page leaves; tiny bumps at mostly upper corners of some leaves. Very Fine. [Item #8349]
