You and Your Big Mouth: Cartoons by Pat Moriarity (No. 2, March 1993)
Seattle, WA: Starhead Comics, 1993. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. “Pat, here’s some stuff for your comic. Maybe it is of some use to you. If you use it, just tell them who wrote the story line and get my name right and send me a few copies and we’ll call it square. If you reprint this in any other way and fuck with me that will be a drag. Good luck and while I dont read comics ever, I like the Buk one you drew and I am liking the Big Mouth comic that you sent on this occasion. Hope all is well with you and thank you for the interest.”--Henry Rollins, pg. 22. Pat Moriarity started out as a punk rock artist in the mid-1980’s music scene of Minneapolis, working for Twin/Tone records, doing things like paste up, poster design and cartoons for acts like CURTISS A, THE REPLACEMENTS, MEKONS, MAGNOLIAS, FAT TUESDAY, SWINGIN’ TEENS and SOUL ASYLUM. He got his start in sequential art in 1987 when Fantagraphics published his first attempt at comics in Graphic Story Monthly, a story called “POPCORN PIMPS”. In 1988 He won first prize out of 300 entries in the Twin Cities Reader’s First annual cartoon contest. He went on to appear in anthologies like Zero Zero, Real Stuff, Pictopia, Top Shelf, Aleksandar Zograf’s Flock Of Dreamers, Duplex Planet and AESOP’s FABLES before getting his own comic book title, the Harvey Award nominated Big Mouth, in 1993. Offered today is Big Mouth #2, published in March of 1993. The second issue of Moriarity’s punk-meets-grotesque comic, Big Mouth #2, is another explosive addition to Moriarity’s oeuvre. This issue features: “Single Moms” by Pat and Karen Moriarity, a sardonic piece about a single mother struggling with raising young children; “One-Sided Ego Battle” by Pete Bagge (b. 1957), a whacked-out, junk-ridden odyssey of an artist versus society; “The Man Was a Boy Once” by Henry Rollins (b. 1961), the actor, writer, and former vocalist of punk band BLACK FLAG; “Gun Gag” by Dennis Worden, creator of the comic Stickboy; “Work Farm Blues!” a 60’s styled “Stick-it-to-the-man” tirade against capitalism and the prison system, by R.L. Crabb; and “Waving Flag of Snot” by Charles Bukowski (1920-1994), the late, great patron-saint of all things debauched with art by Pat Moriarity with points in Debritto, B1688, pg. 395., among many other contributions! An incredibly rare, punk-inspired comic! Comic book in stapled wrappers. First & only printing. In very fine condition with only minor wear to fine edges, and slight smudging to front and back covers. Very Fine. [Item #8353]
