Real Stuff: A Staggering Barrage of Anti-Heroic Legerdemain
Seattle, WA: Fantagraphics Books, 1991. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. “Well, Eichhorn: / I see you depicted me as a guy with white hair and beard in your comic strip REAL STUFF. Well, now maybe it’s good for the Season. I can go as Santa Claus, pick up a few bagels ringing my silver balls. As per being “terrified of people,” I am terrified that they will dull me with their unoriginal blather. You have no idea how many strangers want to come in and drink with me but I find I’m my own best company when it comes to guzzling and I generally do it alone and well and fully. I don't care to have my intoxication sullied and moiled by others. I did plenty of time in the bars and alleys, that shit gets old. Tell your friends that I have nothing against them except that they belong to the human race. / lucky new year, kid, / Buk.”--Charles Bukowski, verso of front cover. Dennis P. Eichhorn (1945-2015) was an American writer, best known for his adult-oriented autobiographical comic book series Real Stuff. Offered today is the second issue of Real Stuff, published March, 1991. This issue of the autobiographical comic features: “Memoirs of a Fightin’ Missionary” by Eichhorn and J.R. Williams (b. 1957) about Eichhorn’s time as a football player at Whitman College; “The Joeist Philosophy” by Eichhorn and Michael Dougan (1959-2023) legendary artist and cartoonist; the anime-meets-photo-real “Het!” by Eichhorn and Stanley W. Shaw, about Eichhorn’s misadventures in Punk; “Soap Opera” by Eichhorn and Roberta Gregory (b. 1953), about Eichhorn's time as a bartender in Seattle; and a letter (quoted above) and the poem “The Flashing of the Odds” by Charles Bukowski (1920-1994), the late, great patron-saint of all things debauched with points in Debritto, B1547, pg 372., among many other great contributions! An incredible issue of a rare, “fuck you” style comic that is sadly no longer in print. Comic book in stapled wrappers. First & only printing. In very fine condition with only minor wear to fine edges, and slight smudging to front and back covers. Very Fine. [Item #8359]
