Original Photograph of John Sinclair and Lyman Woodard

Detroit, MI: Robin Eichele, c. 1964-1965. Original Photograph. Single Sheet. An original black & white photographic print (measuring appx. 11" x 8.5" incl. margin) featuring John Sinclair (1941-2024) the American poet, writer, and political activist from Flint, Michigan and Lyman Woodard (1942-2009), the Owosso, MI-born Jazz organist-&-pianist who studied at the Oscar Peterson School of Contemporary Music in Toronto, Canada. Woodard was a part of the scene surrounding the Detroit Artists’ Workshop from shortly after its inception onward, and he and Sinclair made for fast friends given their mutual appreciation of Jazz. This appreciation is reflected in the albums that serve as “props” effectively in this image: Ornette Coleman’s (1930-2015) masterpiece of March, 1961, “This is Our Music,” as well as Coleman’s album of two years prior, “Tomorrow is the Question!” A most unique John Sinclair/Detroit Artists’ Workshop-related collectible. From the collection of scholar, poet and our dear friend Robin Eichele (b. 1941), noted Mimeograph Revolutionary, photographer & co-founder of the Detroit Artists' Workshop with the late, great John Sinclair and Charles Moore. On verso of this item is an identifying label that identifies Sinclair and Moore, as well as Eichele being the photographer ("Eichleay" is a misspelling of Robin's name, verified by the correct spelling of his name directly above the incorrectly spelled name). In relatively very fine condition with only the slightest rubbing & faint scratching to glossy recto; a few miniscule bumps at edges & corners; a touch of rubbing, age-toning & occasional spotting to verso. Very Fine. [Item #8378]
