Original Photograph of John Sinclair with Ron English

Detroit, MI: Robin Eichele, 1965. First Edition. “O I would like to break my teeth / by means of expressing a radiator! / I say I must dent that which gives heat! / Dent! regardless the tradition of my mouth. / I would like to drive a car / but I must drive it! / Look–there must be a firing squad, yes, / but why a wolf? / I mean if I pass by with a rainball ball / should I pass by with a jackinthebox instead? / Confused I’d best leave wonder and candy and school / and go find amid ruin the peremptory corsair. / Sober / Wier Moors furs tail deer paws / risked and fevered thinking / owls in flashlight.”--Gregory Corso, “Discord,” The Happy Birthday of Death, pg. 21. Original black & white photographic print (measuring approx. 11” x 8”) featuring John Sinclair (1941-2024), the American poet, writer, and political activist from Flint, Michigan, and Ron English (b. 1941), jazz guitarist with roots wide and deep in blues, Broadway, bebop, avant-garde, funk, Motown and gospel and an unknown individual at the bottom right of the photo. Sinclair was a co-founder of the Detroit Artist Workshop, as well as a Marxist organizer, the manager of the legendary MC5, and the chairman of the White Panther Party; an all around literary-cultural legend of the 1960s. Ron English, on the other hand, was a jazz guitarist from Lansing, Michigan, who eventually went on to join the Detroit Contemporary 5, led by trumpeter Charles Moore (1951-2024), in the mid-60’s. Its first edition also included drummer Danny Spencer, bassist John Dana and saxophonist Larry Nozero (1943-2005). The DC5 was the house band of the Detroit Artists Workshop Society, an arts collective spearheaded by Sinclair. The photograph features both Sinclair and English pouring over some sheets of paper in English’s hands, while the pair stands in front of a stove with a kettle on it. An unknown figure’s head is in the bottom right corner. The location of this photo is unknown, but presumably the circumstance of the photo is a DAW event or prior/after a Detroit Contemporary 5 show. This photo was taken by and is from the collection of scholar, poet and our dear friend Robin Eichele (b. 1941), noted Mimeograph Revolutionary & co-founder (with the late, great John Sinclair of the Detroit Artists’ Workshop. First & only printing. In relatively very fine condition with only minor wear to fine edges. Very Fine. [Item #8380]
