Thirsty: Poems
Toronto, Ontario, Canada: McClelland & Stewart, 2002. First Edition, First Printing. Inscribed, signed & dated by Dionne Brand to Albert Glover. “This is a poem about the city. About a May morning coming down like thunder before rain. About a man who has visions, hovering on the edge but hating it, restless and at war with the world but wanting the peace that passes understanding. Everything he does is half-done, except his death. When he falls, his parched spirit crying ‘thirsty,’ everyone’s luck is running out, out, while the city waits. This is also about the poet, her own restless sensibility woven in and out through the poem’s lyric beauty, dramatic power and storytelling grace. It is written in the margins, like a medieval manuscript with shades of light and darkness.” (From back cover) This collection of poetry comes from award-winning Canadian writer Dionne Brand, who was Toronto’s first Black Poet Laureate from Sept. 2009 to Nov. 2012. She has taught at the University of Guelph, Simon Fraser University, St. Lawrence University, and Vancouver Island University. In 2017, she was named poetry editor of McClelland & Stewart, publisher of this book. From the collection of Albert Glover (b. 1942), the great American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher who is the foremost living authority on the literary giant Charles Olson (1910-1970, our favorite Maximus Obscurantist).
