Homages & Elegies
Cambridge, MA: n/p, c. 2000. First Edition. Signed twice by Daniel Bosch. “Pity, the lump in your own through | Self-pious Pity; Pity the wishbone. | Pity, the self-employed esthetician | Contracted for us by the government. | Pity, the shingle. Pity, the physician. | Pity, sipped from an inverted paper cone.” (First stanza, Homage to Christopher Smart, Daniel Bosch). A self-published collection of poetry by Daniel Bosch, an American poet, essayist, and translator. The chapbook was “printed at a Kinko’s across the street from Harvard Yard and stapled in my rooms on campus,” Bosch recalls. There was a second “printing” by Grolier Poetry Bookshop later on. “I remember feeling good about the faux granite paper and thinking about how my signature in sharpie (every copy is a ‘signed’ copy) could be seen as a kind of jokey engraving in stone. The poems in this chapbook form (with some additions) the first part of the volume Crucible of 2002 from the (short lived) Handsel Books imprint of Other Press in New York,” he told Third Mind Books. Bosch has appeared in magazines such as Poetry, The New Republic, The Paris Review, The Times Literary Supplement, Slate, Beloit Poetry Journal, Agni, Poetry Daily, The Brooklyn Rail, and Harvard Review, where he was Poetry Editor for Issues 19 and 20. He was senior editor of the online literary magazine Berfrois from 2013 to 2020. For eight years he was director of Writing & Publishing at Walnut Hill School for the Arts. He has also taught writing at Emory University, Boston University, Harvard University, and Tufts University. From the collection of Albert Glover (b. 1942), the great American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher who is the foremost living authority on the literary giant Charles Olson (1910-1970, our favorite Maximus Obscurantist). Bosch has signed the piece twice: on the cover in black marker and at the title page in blue ink. Chapbook in stapled wrappers.
