Guerrilla Vol. 2 No. 2 (1968)
New York, NY, USA: Artists & Writers Militia/Black Mask, 1968. First Edition Thus. Single Sheet. “Art matters little to us, we profoundly hope that wars, and colonial insurrection will annihilate this Western civilization whose vermin you defend even in the orient…We assert that we have found treason and whatever else can harm the security of the state more reconcilable with than the sale of large quantities of lard to a nation of pigs and dogs.”--from recto near top. A flagship in revolutionary thought, poetry, and news, “Guerrilla” was first published during the summer riots in Detroit in 1967 and the height of the Detroit Free Press literary movement. Founded and run by Allen Von Newkirk (A seminal figure in the Detroit radical scene of the sixties, where he was affiliated with such groups as the Detroit Artists Workshop and John Sinclair's (1941-2024) White Panther Party) and situated squarely in the window of political possibility inaugurated by 1960s riots, the newspaper featured a star-studded roster, with Ellen Phelan (b. 1943) serving as Art Editor, and a list of contributing editors that included Sun Ra (1914-1993), Diane Di Prima (1934-2020), Michael McClure (1932-2020), Stan Brakhage (1933–2003), Sinclair, Robert Kelly (b. 1935), Marion Brown (1931-2010), David Meltzer (1937-2016), and Joel Oppenheimer (1930-1988). This particular issue, Guerrilla Vol. 2 No. 2 is a reprint of the original broadside from an unknown newspaper. This issue features: a couple of poems from LeRoi Jones (1934-2014), a/k/a, Amiri Baraka; a political, polemic piece of poetry about art by the legendary Ed Dorn (1929-1999); the incisive “A Declaration” by George Bowering (b. 1935), Canadian poet, novelist and historian; a long poem by Victor Coleman (b. 1944), legendary Canadian poet; and “New Mexico Poem” by the titanic Diane di Prima, among many other great contributions! An incredibly rare issue of the legendary underground, surrealist, Marxist-Leninist political publication. From the collection of Albert Glover (b.1942), the great American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher who is the foremost living authority on literary giant Charles Olson (our favorite Maximus Obscurantist), with whom we're honored to be acquainted. It should be noted that at the top left corner of verso Glover has handwritten in thin red ink “A reprint in some newspaper” not only as token of his ownership, but also adding to the unique rarity of this item as Glover was not usually inclined to sign or inscribe many items from his collection. Single sheet (approx. 15” x 22 ½”). First Printing thus. In relatively very fine condition with only minor wear to fine edges, one slight tear near middle at top that has been taped over, and very slight discoloration due to age. Very Fine. [Item #8442]
