Broadside: "Crime & Punishment"
Santa Rosa, CA: Black Sparrow Press, 1999. Limited First Edition. Single Sheet. "listening to Beethoven/ after a bad day at the track/ then frying a steak/ trying to return to creation// it's like trying to return to your love/ after a bad argument." (first two stanzas) A broadside (appx. 5&3/4" x 8&3/4") with the title poem by Charles Bukowski (1920-1994), the great American cult favorite poet-denizen of the dive bar & the racetrack. A spare, elegant Black Sparrow production. Debritto, A162, pg. 82. According to Debritto, 350 numbered & 26 lettered copies of this edition with the above dimensions were published in August 1999, along with "additional unknown number of copies stamped "PROOF," measuring 6 15/16 x 9 7/16 in." Although this copy has the dimensions of the numbered/lettered edition, there is neither a number or letter- we surmise this is a publisher's copy; or was meant to be, but was not, numbered or lettered. An exceedingly scarce collectible for the dedicated Bukowski completist, in perhaps its very rarest, albeit puzzling, form that does not entirely conform to its most up-to-date bibliographic description but is certainly genuine. In very fine condition with only one tiny bump at upper left corner (recto); otherwise appearing substantially mint. Very Fine. [Item #8456]
