The Capilano Review No. 11 (January 1977)

North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada: The Capilano Review, 1977. First Printing. “They were in a twenty-six dollar room at the Chelsea Hotel in cement Manhattan. She was lying on the bed, her hair in curlers under a bandanna. Little flag of disposition, as at the novillero bullfight in Mexico City five years earlier he had resolutely bought seats in the sun. Reading a book on ‘Blow-Up’ they had found earlier in the afternoon. Just lying there in the middle of Nueva York as if they we removing in & there was no hurry to do anything but rest. The brown dresser had been painted numerous times & cream yellow showed under the brown where some predecessor had moved something.” (Opening of “The Creator Has a Master Plan,” p. 16, George Bowering) An early number from The Capilano Review, the still-running bi-annual literary and art magazine out of North Vancouver. Founded and edited by Canadian painter Pierre Coupey (b. 1942), it was originally housed in Capilano College (now University) but went independent in 2015. In this issue are: “The Creator has a Master Plan” by George Bowering (b. 1935), a Canadian author who was the first Canadian Parliamentary Poet Laureate; three poems by Michael Davidson (b. 1940), a prolific poet and longtime professor at the University of California at San Diego, where he was also the first curator at the Mandeville Department of Special Collections; a pair of short stories by Canadian novelist Gregory Hollingshead (b. 1947), a longtime professor at the University of Alberta; selections from SULPHUROUS POEMS by poet Mark Madoff (no relation to the Ponzi scheme family); poems by Black Mountain College-educated Michale Rumaker (1932-2019); an interview with Canadian sculptor and artist Tom Burrows; and a photograph by Bob Keziere of a theatrical performance by Canadian artist and curator Tom Graff, among other pieces. From the collection of Albert Glover (b. 1942), the American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher who is the foremost living authority on literary giant Charles Olson (1910-1970; our favorite Maximus Obscurantist). Trade-format softcover original.
