Contact/II Vol. 6 No. 32/33 (Summer/Fall 1984)

New York, NY, USA: Contact Publications, 1984. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. “The Sunlight Man / taken in dry winds of late summer, / bowed stems of yellow grasses whisper / a final name to be given other seasons. / A dwarf sits upon the shoulders / of a six fingered wizard / while behind / shuffles a monster given existence / by the necessity of humanity. / Often / falls an oak before its time / like myths we recreate in dreaming.”--Peter Blue Cloud, “The Sunlight Man: For John Gardner,” pg. 30. Contact/II was an American literary magazine from New York. Established in 1976, the periodical was edited by Maurice Kenny (1929-2016) and Josh Gosciak. Contact/II published poetry, reviews, and interviews. Contact/II also published books and chapbooks of contemporary poetry. The name Contact/II was a tribute to Contact, a small press poetry magazine produced in the 1920s and 1930s by William Carlos Williams (1883-1963). Offered today is the Fall 1984 issue, Contact/II Vol. 6 No. 32/33. This issue, focusing on writings about and by Native American poets, features: an interview with Oneida poet Roberta Hill Whiteman (b. 1947), a review of her (at the time new book) Star Quilt (1984), as well as the poems “Star Quilt,” and “May the Dark be Kind”; “Tricking the Trickster,” an essay on Peter Blue Cloud’s (1935-2011) book of poetry Elderberry Flute Song by Ward Churchill (b. 1947); the poem “The Sunlight Man” by Peter Blue Cloud; “Like a Guerilla,” a poem by Garret Lambrev; the poems “PAZ,” and “Still Life With Running Water” by Stephen Lewandowski; "Dismembering Histories” an essay on Sharon Doubiago (b. 1941), by Judith Roche (1941-2019); the review “Texas Sprawl” on Ed Dorn’s (1929-1999) Captain Jack’s Chaps or Houston/MLA (1984); and “Classic Instructions” a review of Michael McClure’s (1932-2020) Fragments of Perseus (1983) by Michael Duff, among many other great contributions! From the collection of Albert Glover (b. 1942), the great American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher who is the foremost living authority on literary (and literal) giant Charles Olson (our favorite Maximus Obscurantist), with whom we’re honored to be acquainted. Stapled wrappers. First & presumably only printing. In relatively very fine condition with only minor wear to fine edges, slight rusting at staples, and minor staining/discoloration due to age; the remnants of a blue adhesive seal are affixed near the center of the open edges of covers.
