Collections Two (August 1968)
Sussex, England: Peter Riley, 1968. First Printing. Stapled Sheets. Presentation copy signed by editor-publisher Peter Riley for Albert Glover. The second number of the short-lived but influential literary journal edited & published by Peter Riley (b. 1940), the esteemed & prolific British poet, essayist & editor. With three poems from the epic Maximus series by Charles Olson (1910-1970), the Great American Black Mountain-&-Beyond Poet's-Poet who is our favorite Maximus Obscurantist (pgs. 31-34). Also in this issue are contributions of poetry & prose-poetry by Victor Coleman (b. 1944, the acclaimed Canadian poet & editor); Paul Metcalf (1917-1999, the noted pedegreed poet & prose writer who was Herman Melville's great-grandson) & many more. Large-format journal in side-stapled sheets incl. covers, presumed first-&-only printing. Between inner front cover & recto first leaf (index) is a smaller yellow sheet bound in with red printing at recto: "COLLECTION TWO/ Presentation copy/ for Al Glover" below which Riley has hand-written his signature in blue ink. Albert Glover (b. 1942), the dedicatee of this presentation copy & from whose collection we obtained this, is the most-respected American poet, publisher, editor & academician who is the foremost living authority on Olson. Glover was a student of & was anointed by the Maximus Master himself during the 1960s, & ever since has served outstandingly to carry the Olsonian Torch as editor, publisher & scholar. A scarce & essential literary collectible in its singularly rarest contemporary form, greatly enriched by Riley's signature & its status as a presentation copy to Glover; & therefore with the most highly distinguished, relevant association & provenance. See also our many Coleman (incl. item No.s 8536, 8538), Metcalf & esp. Olson-related collectibles. In relatively quite fine condition with mild rubbiing, age-toning & occasional spotting to front, back covers; slight wear & some tiny bumps, creases at/from edges & corners of same; one very small, mostly closed surface-tear near lower left corner of front cover from edge with minimal loss of paper thereon; staples at (front) left side beginning to rust with minimal nearby instances of spotting-bleeding at left margin of front cover; light rubbing, a hint of age-toning & some tiny bumps, creases at edges of text block incl. spine. Interior fine with a trace of age-toning to inner covers & page leaves; faint creasing from upper corners/edges of some leaves; tiny bumps at corners of some leaves. Fine. [Item #8530]
