Conversations with Robert Graves
Jackson, MS: University Press of Mississippi, 1989. First Edition, First Printing. Softcover. "Especially in the sixties and seventies, Graves became a cult figure because of his openness to drugs and extramarital sex. But he continuously reminded those who wanted another guru of the counter culture that he did not approve of promiscuity and the indiscriminate use of drugs. Predictably, the cults and their gurus ran their course..." (Frank L. Kersnowski, Introduction). For anyone who knows something about English poet and author of "I, Claudius" Robert Graves' (1895-1985) work, “Conversations with Robert Graves” is a good opportunity to delve into his life. “Conversations with Robert Graves,” edited by American author & scholar Frank L. Kersnowski (b. 1934), consists of a series, ordered over time, of articles written by people who dealt with Graves and of formal interviews they gave him. As in a documentary, Graves is seen from different angles and moments in his life, from his decision to abandon the impasse in post-World War I England to his approaching death on the island of Mallorca. Graves produced more than 140 works in his lifetime. His poems, his translations and innovative analyses of the Greek myths, his memoir of his early life, including his role in World War I, and his speculative study of poetic inspiration "The White Goddess" have never been out of print. He was also a renowned short story writer, with stories such as "The Tenement" still being popular today. With entries from great Modernist authors including Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) and Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986).
