Here We Go
Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England: The Stranger's Press, 1965. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. Signed by Anselm Hollo. “The boat has arrived | & there, | the elephant’s trumpet, | farewell | Her weight on my knees | his head on my shoulder | here | we | go | we, best-loved animals | one, two, three | & as Illuminated | as we’ll ever be” (from “& How It Goes," Anselm Hollo, pg. 3) Appointed as the anti-Poet Laureate in 2001 by peers in protest of banal poetry, Anselm Hollo (1934 – 2013) was an award-winning Finnish-born poet & translator who at one time taught at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado (co-founded by Allen Ginsberg & Anne Waldman). This short (9 pages) chapbook comes early in Hollo’s career, when he had made a name for himself in the London poetry scene; it was published by the small Stranger’s Press the same year of the famed International Poetry Incarnation, of which Hollo was one of the performers. Hollo has signed the copyright page in black marker. From the collection of Richard Cupidi (b. 1945), our esteemed friend in the UK who managed the fabled Unicorn Bookshop in Brighton, England with Bill Butler (1934-1977, the famed American-expatriate bookseller & publisher). From the late 1960s through the early 1970s, Unicorn proffered & published many outstanding productions by William S. Burroughs, J.G. Ballard et al., some of which have become the scarcest, all-but-unobtainable Beat-&-Beyond collectibles (see for example our item No.s 8217, 8366). After prevailing against censorious harassment efforts, Unicorn closed & Butler died in short order. Cupidi went on to found the Public House Bookshop in Brighton, which had a long & successful run but is also now closed, & he still resides there. We have been honored to obtain what Cupidi has termed "The Last Hurrah," all the remaining treasures of Unicorn & Public House, some of which have become the stuff of myth. First Edition, though not stated as such at copyright page. In relatively Fine condition with some rubbing, scratching, and very faint indentations to front, back covers & stapled spine; mild creasing to edges & corners of same. Interior Fine with light age-toning throughout and some mild creasing to corners of some leaves. Fine. [Item #8563]
