Broadside: Present Beau Robin Blaser

Boulder, CO: Kavyayantra Press, 1995. First Edition, First Printing. Single Sheet. “Able laser seer in rose | An eros orb or ball | Rare, rare lobelia rails | A noble nib | Robed and born” (“Present Beau Robin Blaser,” Lee Ann Brown) This short poem in broadside format by poet and publisher Lee Ann Brown (b. 1963) was published in July 1995 for the 70th birthday of Robin Blaser (1925-2009), the American-Canadian poet and longtime professor at Simon Fraser University who emerged from the "Berkeley Renaissance" of the 1940s and 1950s as a central figure in that burgeoning literary scene amongst poets such as Jack Spicer and Robert Duncan. Brown, whose poetry draws from the New York School, is the founder of Tender Button Press, which focuses on experimental poetry by women. This broadside was published by Kavyayantra Press, the imprint run by faculty and students in the Department of Writing and Poetics at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, one of several locations where Brown has taught. The printing was done by husband and wife Ken Mikolowski & the late Ann (1940-1999). The Mikolowskis ran Detroit’s Alternative Press, the fabled independent imprint. From the collection of Brian Jacobs (b. 1969), a most-distinguished author, publisher & educator who attended Naropa University during the 1990s, where he was the student of its co-founders Anne Waldman & Allen Ginsberg- he was appointed by Ginsberg as his official assistant in the later period of his attendance. Jacobs has gone on to ever-greater heights as a True Beat Progeny, & we have been privileged to obtain his stellar collection, highlights of which including this are the exclusive focus of this group of New Arrivals. Single Sheet. First Edition, presumed First-&-Only Printing. In Fine condition with some creasing and bumping to edges & corners; there is a small hole at the top edge from a pushpin. Fine.
