COUGH 3
Toronto, Ontario, Canada: COUGH, 2014. First Edition, First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. "Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Investments in oil, broadcasting or film could prove profitable if you have some risk capital to spend. Try to see your partner's point of view. Two heads are better than one." (Virgo Horoscope, 9/11/72). COUGH 3, a Toronto, Canada based underground double-sided literary magazine guest-edited by Canadian Brad Shubat (b. 1970), is the third issue of the collaborative COUGH magazine, which includes work by Charles Olson (1910-1970) Curriculum of the Soul participants (See Item No.s 7966, 8138, 8341) Jack Clarke (1933-1992), Michael Boughn (b. 1946) & Ed Dorn (1929-1999), the American poet and teacher often associated with the Black Mountain poets and most well known for Gunslinger, a six part long form political poem about a demigod cowboy, a saloon madam, and a talking horse named Claude Levi-Strauss. In Dorn's 28(Side 1), he name drops fellow Black Mountain poet Victor Coleman (b. 1944), and curiously enough, a newspaper clipping of Coleman's 1972 birthday horoscope is printed beneath the poem (likely showing Dorn's inspiration for the poem). An excerpt from Coleman's Suite Sixteen also makes an appearance in the A-Side of the magazine. COUGH appears to have been spearheaded by Coleman and Boughn, with the encouragement and support of a growing base of younger writers, like Shubat, whom emerged out of either of their workshops run through the Toronto New School of Writing. The range of the material in the issue, hefty at some sixty-four pages, is impressive, and occasionally runs a bit roughshod in terms of consistency of quality, but is rich in vibrant energy. The strength of the journal, in many ways, comes from the feeling that the reader is invited into the process of the writing workshop, able to witness a group of writers attempting, listening and learning. With quotes from San Francisco Renaissance poet Jack Spicer (1925-1965), Black Mountain adjacent poet Denise Levertov (1923-1997) and Beat Generation poet Anne Waldman (b. 1945) & so much more! From the collection of Albert Glover (b. 1942), the great American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher who is the foremost living authority on the aforementioned literary giant & Maximus Obscurantist Charles Olson, with whom we're honored to be acquainted.
