Original Concert Postcard: Siegel Schwall, Blue Cheer, Soul Survivors (December 21-23, 1967)

San Francisco, CA: Family Dog Productions, 1967. First Edition, First Printing. Single Sheet. A postcard (appx. 5” x 7”) announcing a series of three concerts headlined by the (Corky)Siegel-(Jim)Schwall Band, along with Blue Cheer (December 22 only) & Soul Survivors (December 21 & 23 only) during December 21-23, 1967 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. It is a work by Family Dog Productions, which was founded by Chet Helms (1942-2005), the legendary countercultural impresario who founded & managed the group Big Brother & The Holding Company, & who is regarded as the key "father" figure of San Francisco's Summer of Love. FDP promoted concerts at the Fillmore Auditorium and Avalon Ballroom and produced some of the most iconic rock posters of the century. This postcard coincides with a full-size poster (See our Item no. 6209); it is by artist Chris Johnson, of whom we have been unable to obtain any biographical information.  King, FD-91-OP-1, pg. 157. King writes: " During this period the Family Dog art director tended to select one work from one artist and one work from another rather than a long series of posters by one artist as had been the case previously with (Stanley) Mouse and (Alton) Kelley, (Wes) Wilson & (Victor) Moscoso. Most of these were not professional artists and did not become professional artists later." (pg. 157). This seems to have been the case with Johnson. Of this piece, Kin writes: "The central image is a collage made up of five elements. From the top they are: a tan sky, the moon, a mountain valley, the head and one paw of a cat wearing a pink shirt and the open jaws of a baboon." King has simply entitled this poster "Collage.” King, FD-97-OPC-A, pg. 162. Recto includes the Family Dog logo and address, and a patterned design leading up to the “place stamp here” corner; there were also a bulk rate and a mechanically addressed version of the postcard. Single Sheet. First Edition, First Printing. In Fine-Very Fine condition with light age-toning and very minor creasing to corners. Fine-Very Fine. [Item #8645]
