The Magazine of Further Studies No. 1 (1965)

Buffalo, NY: Magazine of Further Studies, 1965. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. “A monster under the feet. Beware the monster under the feet. / Green, the green of pond slime in August / Red ocher, dull, a dried red / Beware him. He is there, under the feet. / And sounds that sound in the head. Beware the sounds in the head. / A whirr as of wings beating air / Breathing, heavy, breath of the dead / Beware them. They are the sounds of the head. / Tormented air / twisted body / skin cut away from bone / like apple pairings it trails in air / as bone, blood, skin fall / dismembered / it writhes alive / somehow sentient, tumbling / Below the open jaw / M A W / white teeth multifoliate / terrific mouth / furious flower / Torn, gulped inward / suddenly / the tight gullet squeezes / the pieces down / There is darkness for twelve hours. / Beware the 12 hour darkness. / He, waiting under the feet / The brain explodes with the sound of wings / Beware. Twelve hours for darkness to shape the air!”--Albert Glover, “After seeing Goya’s CHRONOS DEVOURING.” The Institute of Further Studies emerged during the fall of 1965 in Buffalo, NY, when George Butterick (1942-1988), John Clarke (1933-1992), Albert Glover (1942-2026), and Fred Wah (b. 1939) decided to continue their work with Charles Olson (1910-1970) after he had left SUNY-Buffalo and returned to Gloucester, Massachusetts. One result of their efforts was The Magazine of Further Studies, six issues of which appeared between 1965 and 1969. All issues were printed offset from stencils typed on an IBM Selectric typewriter on 8½ x 11 white stock and stapled within heavy paper covers cut from a roll of packing material. An image of some sort was then applied to the front cover. Issue no. 3 featured a patch of raccoon fur cut from an old coat; no. 6 presented one end of a piece of baling twine that led inside, etc. This first issue features a possibly hand-drawn yetti/sasquatch/bi-pedal automaton on the front cover. Contributors included the editors as well as Olson himself, Robert Duncan (1919-1988), John Wieners (1934-2002), Ed Sanders (b. 1939), Duncan McNaughton (b. 1943), Ruth Fox, Stephen Rodefer (1940-2015), Harvey Brown (1917-1986), David Tirrell, and others. Offered today is the inaugural issue of the legendary poetry mag, Magazine of Further Studies 1 (1965). This debut issue features: “Lament For The Makaris,” and “Berkeley 16/7/65 fo Merry” by Bob Hogg (1942-2022), Canadian poet, critic, and professor; “Seven,” and a couple of untitled poems by Jack Clarke (1933-1992), noted poet, jazz musician and scholar of William Blake (1757-1827) and Charles Olson; a few untitled poems by Harvey Brown; “Poem for Virgins,” “After seeing Goya’s CHRONOS DEVOURING,” “Devil’s Den,” “7.45pm / aug 19 / buffalo” by Albert Glover; a handful of poems by George Butterick; “The Commotion” by Stephen Rodefer, American poet and painter; “from MOUNTAIN,” and “BENT BENT” by Fred Wah; and “Lost in the Stars,” and “To the Rain” by the legendary John Weiners among many other great contributions. From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the great American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher who was the foremost remaining authority on literary giant Charles Olson (our favorite Maximus Obscurantist), with whom we’re honored to have been acquainted. Stapled wrappers. First & presumably only printing. In relatively very fine condition with only minor wear to fine edges, slight staining/discoloration to front and back covers, light marginalia in thin red, black, and blue ink throughout interior, very slight rusting at staples, and slight discoloration due to age-toning throughout interior and exterior. Very Fine. [Item #8655]
