Buffalo, NY: Shuffaloff Press, 1990. limited First Trade Edition. Stapled Wrappers in Over-Wraps. "Not the sight/ of sea blue with/ sudden gull but/ the glasses it's/ seen through as/ life like as/ ever it was." ("As If," unpaginated) A later chapbook of poems by Robert Creeley (1926-2005), the great American poet & literary theorist affiliated with the Black Mountain School of poetry. With illustrations by Susan Barnes (possibly the acclaimed New Jersey artist, from prior to her becoming a landscape oil painter) at front cover in color & in black-&-white at frontispiece & throughout. A beautiful production, larger-format chapbook in stapled wrappers with illustrated over-wraps with flaps, one of 450 trade copies (from a total edition of 500) per colophon. From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the esteemed poet, editor, publisher & academician who was the foremost remaining authority on Charles Olson (1910-1970), the Great American Black Mountain-&-Beyond Poet's-Poet who is our favorite Maximus Obscurantist. Glover was a student of & anointed by the Maximus Master himself at SUNY Buffalo during the 1960s, & had ever since outstandingly carried the Olsonian Torch as bibliographer, editor, publisher & scholar. We have just been informed of Glover's passing during February of 2026, & extend our hearfelt condolences to his family. We found & have retained, between inner front cover & recto first leaf, a note on publisher's stationary from Michael Boughn, the noted author & publisher who was Creeley's assistant & was affiliated with SUNY Buffalo under Olson's posthumous spiritual mentorship (Creeley was of course among Olson's star Black Mountain protege-colleagues), in fine- very fine condition with only some tiny bumps & creases at/from edges & corners, mild sunning/toning at both surfaces. Glover & Boughn were evidently warm colleague-acquaintances, as exemplified by this warm & chatty note in cursive black ink dated September 10 (presumably 1990) that begins: "Dear Al:/ Thought you might like/ to see this..." A scarce & essential Creeley collectible in its penultimately rarest contemporary form; uniquely enriched with publisher's ephemera & rippling with most-distinguished, relevant associations & provenance. In relatively quite fine-to-very-fine condition with slight rubbing, faint scratching, age-toning & occasional spotting to front, back covers & folded spine of over-wrap; a touch of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same & flaps; a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of inner wrap covers & stapled spine; staples beginning to rust with miniscule interior bleeding therefrom. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at mostly upper corners of some page leaves; bit of staple-rusting at middle noted above. Fine-Very Fine. [Item #8667]
