Ann Arbor, MI: Bentley Historical Library, 1999. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. Frost Bite & Frost-Bark: Robert Frost at Michigan describes and summarizes the series of events that brought the great American poet, Robert Frost (1874-1963) to the University of Michigan here in Ann Arbor for the 1921-1922 academic year. His appointment was unique and aimed towards a general fostering of creativity and the arts among students and the populace. Neither formal in-classroom teaching nor a series of lectures were required. While here, he did do a bit of both, however: devoting ample time and resources to mentoring promising students. He also managed to add to his already classic oeuvre, composing poems like “Whimsies” and “Acquainted with the Night” during his tenure. He came back for a final time in 1924, lured back by both the memory of his time here and a generous and competent university administration, and stayed till 1927. Robert M. Warner (1927-2007) was an America historian who served as archivist to the U.S. National Archives in the 1980s, and he pushed for the establishment of an independent institution to manage the archives rather than it being lumped in with the General Services Administration. The National Archives and Record Administration (NARA) was introduced in 1985. He then served as the dean of the School of Information and Library Science at the University of Michigan where he had received his Ph.D. in 1958. Whether a devotee of Frost’s who knew about this stint, or a total newcomer to the story of his time here, you’re hard pressed to find a better resource than Frost Bite & Frost-Bark: Robert Frost at Michigan. From the collection of Laurence Goldstein (1943-2023), a renowned American author, poet, film critic, editor & academician here at the University of Michigan.
