The Realist Presents: The Last Supplement to the Whole Earth Catalog (March 1971)
New York, NY: The Realist, 1971. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. (Schottlaender C326, p. 67). Published in March 1971, The Last Supplement to the Whole Earth Catalog was issue No. 89 of Paul Krassner’s (1932-2019) groundbreaking magazine of cultural commentary, The Realist. As the item’s entry on the Comix Joint website notes, “Despite its front cover art by Robert Crumb, this is by no means a comic book, but it's closer to being a comic book than most other issues of The Realist. With 132 pages of content, The Last Supplement to the Whole Earth Catalog is a big magazine with a lot to chew on.” There are cartoons by Ed Badajos (1942-1983) and Skip Williamson (1944-2017), and a long, intriguing section from Ken Kesey titled “Tools from My Chest” in which he ruminates on The Beatles, Eldridge Cleaver (1935-1998), and S. Clay Wilson (1941-2021). As it pertains to William S. Burroughs (1914-1997), our Patron Saint-Demon here at Third Mind Books, there is a sample from WSB’s classic cut-up text, Nova Express, which was first published in America ten years prior, in 1964. A classic collectible of the counterculture (the early 1970s variant of it, anyway) for the Burroughs completist. From the collection of our good friend & colleague Brian E.C. Schottlaender (b. 1952), the most-distinguished American librarian-academician who is the author of "Anything But Routine: A Selectively Annotated Bibliography of William S. Burroughs," now in its fifth edition- an indispensable Burroughsian Resource which we always consult for our WSB curations, as above. Magazine in stapled wrappers: First Edition, & one of two versions issued simultaneously which differ only in back cover art, per the Comix Joint website. In strong near fine condition with only minor-to-moderate shelf-wear, some light bumping & related bump-creasing to select locales along fine-edges & corners of front, back covers & spine-edge; moderate rubbing, age-toning to same; otherwise generally clean. Near Fine. [Item #8706]
