Seven Contemporary Sun Dials by Ian Potts/ Poems by Andrew Crozier

Brighton, England: Ian Potts, 1975. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. Inscribed, signed & dated by Andrew Crozier to Albert Glover. "Ever since man learned to judge the time of day from length or direction of the sun's shadows, the sun has been the primary standard of time keeping." (Opening sentence to "Introduction To My Sundials"). The poem Seven Contemporary Sun Dials by British painter & poet Ian Potts (1936-2014) is a significant work that features British poet Andrew Crozier's (1943-2008) poetry. The poem is a collaboration between Potts and Crozier, showcasing the unique blend of their literary talents. Seven Contemporary Sun Dials is a testament to the enduring impact of Potts & Crozier's poetry and the collaborative spirit of the British Poetry Revival. Crozier was integral to the British Poetry Revival of the 1960s & 1970s, a loose movement in the United Kingdom. The Revival was a modernist-inspired reaction to more conservative approaches to British poetry. Poets associated with the British Poetry Revival generally looked to modernist models, such as the American poets William Carlos Williams (1883-1963) and Charles Olson (1910-1970). Many of these poets joined the Beat Generation's Founding Father Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) and an audience of 7,000 people at the Albert Hall International Poetry Incarnation on June 11, 1965 to create what has often been claimed as the first British "happening." Earlier British "happenings" included John Latham's (1921-2006) event-based art and the Skoob Tower ceremonies. This collection was produced for the Brighton Festival, a large, annual, curated multi-arts festival in England, in 1975. From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the great American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher who until recently was the foremost living authority on literary giant Charles Olson (our favorite Maximus Obscurantist), with whom we're honored to have been acquainted. Near the bottom of the title page of Crozier's contribution, Crozier has inscribed, signed & dated to Glover in onyx black ink: "Al, with best wishes | (signed) Andrew 1975." Chapbook Original in Stapled Wrappers: Presumed First Edition, first & only printing. A most collectible British Poetry Revival uniquity in its rarest contemporary form, with relevant association & very distinguished provenance.
