House Beautiful Vol. 82 No. 2 (February 1940)
New York, NY, USA: Hearst Magazines, 1941. First Printing. Softcover. (Schottlaender G17a., p. 165). An early lifestyle/housekeeping magazine edited by Kenneth K. Stowell featuring an ad at inner front cover for Laura Lee Burroughs’ (1888-1970) books on flower arranging (See TMB Item No.s 4686 & 8718). Laura Lee is of course the mother of our Patron Saint-Demon here at Third Mind Books, William S. Burroughs (1914-1997). All told, a curious and charming collectible; and simply indispensable for the Burroughs completist. From the collection of our good friend & colleague Brian E.C. Schottlaender (b. 1952), the most-distinguished American librarian-academician who is the author of “Anything But Routine: A Selectively Annotated Bibliography of William S. Burroughs,” now in its fifth edition- an indispensable Burroughsian Resource which we always consult for our WSB curations, as above. Large-format, perfect-bound magazine: a presumed First Printing of this all-but-forgotten issue of House Beautiful. In Fair-Good but complete condition with moderate-to-extensive rubbing, scratching, spotting & soiling to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & bumps to all edges & corners of covers; much more extensively along with closed tears with small parts missing esp. top at spine; browning & spotting of all edges of text block; interior near fine with only light browning mostly to blank margins of page leaves; curve-bumps at all corners of same; otherwise, clean. Fair-Good. [Item #8719]
