Stroker No. 55 (1995)
Shavertown, PA: Stroker, 1995. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This number of the literay-cultural-art Journal edited by NYC St. Marks Place underground denizen Irving Stettner (1922-2004) features a deep, variously insightful later discussion/interview with Paul Bowles (1910-1999), the Great American-expatriate Beat-&-Beyond author & composer, conducted by Charles Sheldon during June 15, 1993 at Bowles' home in Tangier, Morocco (pgs. 6-13). Also in this issue are contributions of poetry, prose & illustration including Bob Davis' short story "Jimmy Little and the Lone Ranger"; Howard S. Levy & Junko Ohsawa's collaborative article "The Wonders of Senryu, The Mischievous Kid Brother of haiku"; Em McElderry's article on Woodie Guthrie & poem; Kenneth Rexroth's (1905-1982, the great Beat Generation- San Francisco Renaissance mentor figure for whom this issue is dedicated at copyright page) exemplary poem "Thou Shalt Not Kill: A Memorial for Dylan Thomas"; reproduction of Ernst Richter's charming drawing & more. With several contemporary ads for East Village eateries, stores etc. following contributions. Chapbook-format journal in stapled wrappers, presumed first-&-only printing, complete with subscription slip folded between inner covers. Another quintessential exemplar of the later Mimeograph Revolution NYC Lower East Side Zine era in its singularly rarest contemporary form, of particular interest to Bowles & Rexroth completist-collectors. In relatively quite very fine condition with only light rubbing, faint scratching, occasional faint creasing & a hint of age-toning to front, back covers & stapled spine; a touch of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at/from edges & corners of same; very slight age-toning to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only very light age-toning to blank inner covers & page leaves (the latter chiefly at blank margins/edges); tiny bumps at corners of a few leaves. Very Fine. [Item #8743]
