Original Concert Postcard: Big Brother & the Holding Company, Iron Butterfly, Booker T. & the MG's (April 11-13, 1968)
San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1968. First Edition, Second Printing. Single Sheet. "Take another little piece of my heart now, baby | Oh, oh, break it | Break another little bit of my heart now, darling, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah | Oh, oh, have a | Have another little piece of my heart now, baby | Well, you know you got it, if it makes you feel good | Oh, yes indeed" (bridge, "Piece of My Heart," Big Brother & the Holding Company). This postcard (appx. 4 & 5/8" x 7”) designed by Patrick Lofthouse (b. 1937) promotes a concert series which took place during April 11th to the 13th, 1968 at the Fillmore West featuring Big Brother & the Holding Company, Iron Butterfly, and Booker T. & the MG's produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991). American psychedelic artist Lofthouse created the artwork & graphics reproduced here from a photograph of Big Brother & the Holding Company taken by photographer Tom Weir, as well as many other poster designs of the era. Some of Lofthouse's posters hang in the Smithsonian American Art Museum today. Big Brother & the Holding Company was an American rock band that was formed in San Francisco in 1965 as part of the psychedelic music scene, fronted by American rock & roll legend Janis Joplin (1943-1970). Joplin left the band shortly after the concert in December of 1968 to start her own solo career and would tragically die from a heroin overdose two years later. American rock band Iron Butterfly, best known for their 17-minute song "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," promoted songs from their debut album Heavy, a blend of trippy musical exploration and open-ended jams with a hard, distorted attack. Scheduled to appear was Booker T & The MG’s, but the band cancelled in order to attend the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968), who had been assassinated just one week before. Booker T. & the M.G.'s were an American instrumental, R&B, and jazz band formed in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1962. The band helped shape the sound of Southern soul and Memphis soul. Verso blank. Single sheet: first edition, second printing with all points in King's Collector's guide (BG-115-OPC-A, pg. 456). In relatively very fine condition with only minuscule bumps to the fine edges; verso is clean, though mildly age-toned; otherwise, pristinely mint. Very Fine. [Item #8745]
