New York, NY, USA: Modern Library/ Random House, 1983. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. "Jorge Luis Borges is widely recognized as one of the most important and original figures in contemporary literature, and Labyrinths is perhaps the most representative selection of his work. Consisting of some forty tales, parables, literary essays and metaphysical musings, it captures, like no other anthology, the essence of Borges' simple but richly metaphorical style. From "Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius," the story of an unknown planet where only inner life exists, to "Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote," in which Pierre Menard undertakes to compose the Don Quixote and to be (Miguel de) Cervantes, to the ingenious "Library of Babel," and essays on Borges' forebears, (Paul) Valery & (Franz) Kafka, Labyrinths reveals the full scope of his magical imagination, his self-conscious intelligence and vast erudition." (from front flap) The classic English-Language anthology of highlights from the vast oeuvre of Jorge (Francisco Isidoro) Luis Borges (1899-1986), the canonical Argentine short-story writer, critic, essayist, philosopher & poet who was a key influence on the Latin American Magical Realist literary movement. First published in 1962, offered here is the 1983 Modern Library edition, hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, "First Modern Library Edition / September 1983" as stated at copyright page, first printing thus though not specified thereon.
