ISBN: 9781250022844
New York, NY, USA: St. Martin's Griffin, 2013. First American Softcover Edition. Softcover. "Elizabeth II, one of England's longest-reigning monarchs, is an enigma. In public, she confines herself to optimistic pieties and guarded smiles; in private, she is wry, funny, and an excellent mimic. Now, one of Britain's leading journalists and historians gets behind the mask and tells us the fascinating story of the real Elizabeth." (from back cover) The acclaimed Biography of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022), the Beloved British Monarch. Author Andrew Marr (b. 1959) is a popular, award-winning Scottish-born UK journalist, broadcaster & historian. First published in 2011 in the UK under the title The Diamond Queen: Elizabeth II and Her People, offered here is the first American trade-format softcover edition, "First St. Martin's Griffin Edition: February 2013" as stated at copyright page, first printing as indicated by number sequence thereon. With three sections of captioned historical photographs of Her Majesty & Co. including Official Portraits, some in color. From the collection of Barbara (1935-2023) & Irving (1933-2018) Nusbaum, world travellers, connoisseurs, eminent collectors of art & books- the greatly missed mother & father of this still-grieving writer. We found & have retained, between pgs. 122-123, a bookmark promoting the Abu Dhabi branch of the St. Regis Hotel consortium at recto & drink recipe from the legendary King Cole Bar at the Manhattan St. Regis (Where Salvador Dali once held court) at verso, in excellent condition. My parents would always stay at the luxurious St. Regis Hotel on their frequent trips to Manhattan, & it must have been on one of these excursions that they acquired this, as well as the volume itself- which has a vintage price stamp from the vast & venerable Strand Book Store at front cover (slightly obscuring the image of Her Majesty). An outstanding, insightful & rewarding biography of the Great Queen who was an Iconic World Figure during the entire second half of the twentieth century & well into the twenty-first, & whose legacy will undoubtedly be remembered forever after; in an attractively collectible form thus & with distinguished provenance. In relatively quite very fine condition with very light rubbing, faint scratching to front, back covers & spine; a few minuscule bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; previous seller's price sticker noted above (an enriching relic along with the bookmark in our estimation); a touch of rubbing & age-toning to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only a hint of age-toning to blank inner covers & page leaves; tiny bumps at corners of a few leaves. Very Fine. [Item #8777]
