Broadside: Buffalo-Isle of Wight Power Cable
New York, NY, USA: SUNY/AB Department of English, 1967. Limited First Edition. Single Sheet. Signed by Anselm Hollo. “Writing a letter he said / “this instant in time” / but what was that instant / if not where they were / she and the three / like plants with platinum petal hair / sprung from his head.”--Anselm Hollo, “i.” Anselm Hollo (1934-2013) was a Finnish poet and translator. Hollo, who was influenced by the Beat poets, was the author of more than forty books of poetry, including Notes on the Possibilities and Attractions of Existence: New and Selected Poems 1965-2000 (2001), which won the San Francisco Poetry Center Book Award; AHOE (1997); Corvus (1995); Finite Continued (1980); and Sojourner Microcosms: New and Selected Poems 1959-1977 (1977). He also published a book of essays, Caws and Causeries: Around Poetry and Poets (1999). His many translations include works by Paavo Haavikko (1931-2008), Selected Poems 1949-1988 (1991), and Pentti Saarikoski (1937-1983), for whose Trilogy (2003) Hollo received the Harold Morton Landon Translation Award from the Academy of American Poets. Offered today is the 1967 broadside Buffalo-isle of Wight Power Cable. Composed of four sections, this broadside is delightfully concise, replete with gorgeous imagery, and tightly bound with pathos and a masterful sense of how & when to cut the line. Hollo’s poetic voice, suffused with the Beat and New York School influences as it is, soars and presents a beautiful tapestry of experience and senses. This print was produced during the time that Albert Glover was in attendance and under the tutelage of Charles Olson. An increasingly rare, and wonderfully delightful Hollo collectible. From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the great American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher who until recently was the foremost authority on literary giant Charles Olson (our favorite Maximus Obscurantist), with whom we're honored to have been acquainted. Single sheet broadside (approx. 8” x 10 ½”). Limited first edition, one of 25 signed and numbered by the author of which this is #5 as stated at verso. In very fine condition with only minor wear to fine edges, slight smudging/staining to recto and verso, and one horizontal crease folding sheet in half. Very Fine. [Item #8811]
