Maps No. 3: Poems for John Coltrane

Shippensburg, PA: John Taggart, 1970. Limited First Edition. Softcover. John Coltrane died this morning. LeRoi’s in jail. / Whatever you say of the daytime / it gives you a taste / for the obvious / the places where / night is / filled with a different wisdom” (from “Newark,” by Robert Kelly [b. 1935] (p. 13). A special commemorative issue of the irregularly published, critically acclaimed literary magazine Maps, published by American poet & critic John Taggart (b. 1942). In the journal’s introductory note, Taggart writes: “There's the risk that a collection of poems which begin variously from the music of John Coltrane, who struggled always to make that music "more than," may turn out to be a collection of aesthetic and sterile games. But I think it's a risk worth taking; you could even say it's demanded from this liberty to hear, to make what we can from it, as evidence that John Coltrane's music is still very much with us. The liberty's yours as well to read and to go hear.” While Your Devoted VP of Operations here at Third Mind Books is admittedly a junkie for Trane, the contributions of several mid-century American innovators to this issue — including works by Larry Eigner (1927-1996); Barbara Guest (1920-2006); Jackson Mac Low (1922-2004); Robert Kelly (b. 1935); George Economou (1934-2019); and Theodore Enslin (1925-2011) — make this magazine a can’t-miss addition to any collection or library of 20th century avant-garde literary periodicals. From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the esteemed American poet, editor, publisher & academician who was the foremost remaining authority on Charles Olson (1910-1970). Glover was a student of & anointed by the Maximus Master himself at SUNY Buffalo during the 1960s, & had ever since served outstandingly to bear the Olsonian Torch as bibliographer, editor & publisher. Glover passed away February of 2026, & we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family.
