TIME: The Weekly Newsmagazine Vol. 82 No. 23 (December 6, 1963)

New York, NY, USA: Bernard M. Auer, 1963. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. "After the unforgettable television coverage of the overwhelming events, we take up the story to show how President (Lyndon B.) Johnson set out to practice, as well as promise, continuity in government, to examine the men closest to him, and to survey the situation at home and abroad that confronts him. But along with this inevitable forward movement of events, the recent past also needs further illuminating, and in THE NATIONS are more-can-now-be-told stories of those two unknown and bizarre men who so influenced history: Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby." (From "A Letter from the Publisher, Bernard M. Auer," pg. 19) A vintage number of the American Establishment's flagship among its triumvirate of pre-recorded universal media TIMELIFEFORTUNE (our Burroughsian constituency knows exactly what we're talking about...) chiefly edited by Henry R. Luce (1898-1967, the Establishment personified). This issue was published only two weeks after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963), a world-shocking event that tore a rent through history & the implications of which haunt us to this day. The desperately duck-&-cover crowd-controlling theme of the issue is announced at front cover, "The New Administration: A Promise of Continuity & Action," with an illustration of U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk (1909-1994) in front of the Washington Monument- the very symbol of national stability in the wake of sudden tragedy. A lengthy first section, laced with riveting- & reassuring- images in black-&-white & color, records the just-unfolding events: JFK's assasination, Lee Harvey Oswald's arrest, Oswald's assasination by Jack Ruby, the Stately Funeral, President Lyndon B. Johnson's (1908-1973) firmly taking the reins of government...also in this issue are other articles & departments on American & global people & events; & of course those fascinating contemporary ads for cigarettes, booze, automobiles, cameras, stereo systems, televisions etc. that epitomize the "American Century" & never seem to have skipped a beat. Magazine in stapled wrappers, presumed first-&-only printing, complete with intact subscription cards folded between pgs. 6-127. From the collection of Laurence goldstein (1943-2023), a distinguished author, editor & academician here at the University of Michigan. A disturbing, historic relic in its singularly rarest original form, in real time before the Establishment got its act together ("A Plot? Even as Oswald's corpse was being unceremoniously disposed of, Government investigators were deep in one of the nation's most intensive searches. First of all, they were looking for motivation: Was it rational, perhaps part of a plot, or simply the result of an aberrant mind?...," pg. 33A); a MUST collectible for those obsessed with the legacy of JFK & November 22, 1963 (like this writer). In relatively near-fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, mostly faint scratching & light age-toning to front, back covers & stapled spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at/from edges & corners of same; moderate rubbing, age-toning to edges of text block; partially loose, somewhat worn address sticker of original subscriber at lower left margin of front cover, only slightly obscuring the image of Rusk at shoulder, not face). Interior near-fine-to-fine with mild-to-moderate age-toning throughout, particularly at blank margins/edges; tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves. Near Fine. [Item #8821]
