Evergreen Review Vol. 9 No. 36 (June 1965)
New York, NY, USA: Evergreen Review, Inc., 1965. First Printing. Glued Wrappers. "Just as Hieronymus Bosch set down the most diabolical and blood-curdling details with a delicacy of line and a puckish humor which left one with a sense of the mansions of horror attendant upon Hell, so, too, does (William S.) Burroughs leave you with an intimate, detailed vidion of what Hell might be like, a Hell which may be waiting as the culmination, the final product, of the scientific revolution. At the end of medicine is dope; at the end of life is death; at the end of man may be the Hell which arrives from the vanities of the mind." (Norman Mailer, pg. 43) This vintage number of the legendary literary, cultural & arts journal chiefly edited by Barney Rosset features "The Boston Trial of "Naked Lunch," " in which Norman Mailer & Allen Ginsberg are quoted in a partial transcript of interviews conducted by attorney Edward De Grazia on January 12, 1965 during the Boston obscenity trial for Naked Lunch, the delirious masterpiece by William S. Burroughs (1914-1997)- Foremost Founding Father of the Beat Generation-&-Beyond, among the Greatest literary & cultural figures of all time who is the very Patron-Icon of our Third Mind enterprise named in his honor. Maynard & Miles, C118, pg. 142; Shoaf, Section III, No. 76, pg. 132. (*did I miss this, or is there no entry for this in ABR 5.0 Brian?) Also in this issue are contributions by "The Divine" Marquis De Sade, German Giant Gunter Grass, hardboiled journalist Nat Hentoff, canonical avant-garde playwright Eugene Ionesco, Beat poet-publisher LeRoi Jones (soon to become anti-everyone/thing activist Amiri Baraka), Michael O'Donoghue (later a founding figure of the National Lampoon), Octavio Paz (the acclaimed Mexican poet, philosopher & diplomat) & more. Also with exemplary literary (including of course for Rosset's fabled Grove Press) & risque ads, portfolio of erotic sculptures by Ron Boise etc. Larger-format magazine in wrappers with glued perfect binding, presumed first-&-only printing. From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the esteemed American poet, bibliographer, editor, publisher & scholar who until his recent passing was the foremost remaining authority on Charles Olson (1910-1970), the Great Black Mountain-&-Beyond Poet's Poet who is our favorite Maximus Obscurantist. Glover was a student of & anointed by the Maximus Master himself at SUNY Buffalo during the 1960s, & went on to become the premiere bearer of the Olsonian Torch. We were honored to know him, & are deeply saddened at his passing.
