Gentry No. 21 (Winter 1956-57)
New York, NY, USA: Reporter Publications, Inc., 1956. First Edition. Stapled Sheets with Wrappers. This vintage edition of the 1950s-era gentlemen's magazine Gentry highlights eight artists in its feature story with the cover focusing on the color reproductions of Henri Matisse's (1869-1954) "Jazz" collage series. Also included are a short novel by Prudencio de Peredo (1912-1973) illustrated by Feliks Topolski (1907-1989), a series of watercolors by David Fredenthal (1914-1958), photography by Shirley Burden (1908-1989), and poetic translations for a set of Japanese poems that are each paired with a painting provided by Ernest Kroll (1913-1995). Supplementing the period ads, gift suggestions for both men and women, and fashion trends, other pieces include a recipe menu for a Christmas dinner hosted by Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) and a list of "Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior," credited to a teenage George Washington (1732-1799). An essay on Henry James (1843-1916) by W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965), originally published in his collection The Vagrant Mood (1952) follows a list of the "100 finest recordings," and several other stories and essays fill out the rest of this issue. Gentry was a quarterly periodical founded by William C. Segal (1904-2000) that ran from 1951 to 1957. It was known for its production with illustrations, fashion ads that included fabric samples, and additional tipped-in materials, but it only ran 22 issues before shuttering due to financial losses. It remains in the elite ranks of twentieth-century periodicals with the likes of Esquire and Playboy. A rare gem of a bygone era!
