Original Concert Postcard: Chambers Brothers, Quicksilver Messenger Service; Beautiful Day, Sly & the Family Stone et al. (June 18-20, 1968)
San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1968. First Edition, Second Printing. Single Sheet. This postcard designed by Lee Conklin promotes a concert series which took place on June 18-20 & June 21-23, 1968 featuring the Chambers Brothers, [It’s a] Beautiful Day, the Crazy World of Arthur Brown, the Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Sly and the Family Stone, produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991). Lee Conklin is known as the creator of the album cover art for Santana’s debut album in 1969, and his psychedelic art style contributed some of the most iconic poster designs of the era. Per Eric King's Collector's Guide: “This poster is red, white and black on a blue background. The central image is made up of lettering each individual letter [sic] of which is made out of whole or partial human forms. Much of the negative space between the letters is also made up of human forms. The lettering of the word “Fillmore” is especially elaborate. The imagination necessary to create so many different forms is interesting to say the least. Registration of the printing of this poster was often not precisely accurate. Frequently patches of white show through.” The verso features a calendar of other Bill Graham events taking place in June, July, and August of 1968 featuring Jeff Beck, Canned Heat, and other Blues-&-Beyond luminaries. A quintessential relic of time & place. Single sheet: First Edition, Second Printing with all points in King's Collector's Guide (BG-125-OPC-B, pg. 464). In relatively very fine condition with mild age-toning; very mild bumping to the fine edges and corners; otherwise, clean. Very Fine. [Item #8871]
