Original Concert Postcard: Country Joe & the Fish, Moby Grape et al. (May 2-4, 1968)

San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1968. First Edition. Single Sheet. This postcard promotes a concert series which took place during May 2 through 4, 1968, at the Fillmore Auditorium featuring Country Joe & the Fish, Moby Grape, Hour Glass, and the United States of America, produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991). (King, BG-118-OPC-A, pg. 458) The weekend started with Moby Grape, supported by Hour Glass and the United States of America, on Thursday, then Country Joe & the Fish headlined on Friday, and Moby Grape closed out the series the following day. The San Francisco-based Moby Grape was founded in 1966 by a group of singer-songwriters and blended folk, pop, blues, and country to create a unique psychedelic sound that maintained their niche popularity through their many iterations over the decades. Country Joe & the Fish was a Berkeley-based psychedelic rock band founded by Joe McDonald, a.k.a. Country Joe (1942-2026), and Barry Melton, a.k.a. The Fish (b. 1947) that quickly grew to popularity among the counterculture by supporting anti-war efforts and the free love movement in their music. Hour Glass was an American soul band formed in 1967 featuring future members of the Allman Brothers Band, Gregg and Duane Allman. The United States of America were a Los Angeles-based band formed in 1967 who became known as one of the earliest adopters of electronic devices in rock music, preferring their electric violin and synthesizers over the usual guitar sounds. The liquid light show for the concert was created by Holy See, run by Ray and Joan Anderson, and the poster design was created by artist Mari Tepper of San Francisco. Tepper began designing posters for theaters in the San Francisco area while still in high school, and she continued on to become a renowned artist with a lifelong commitment to social justice and equal rights. The image is made up of purples, blues, and grays depicting several abstract human figures and faces surrounded by the band names and show details. Single sheet: first edition, first printing, with the "Place Stamp Here" backing that indicates an original printing. In relatively fine-to-near-fine condition with mild-to-moderate age-toning to the white areas of the recto and verso; very mild bending/dimpling visible in some areas of verso; very mild bumping to the fine edges and corners in some areas; along the bottom edge is a visible blue line from the other design printed with this one before being cut. Fine-Very Fine. [Item #8895]
