"It's Autogeddon/ An Armageddon of autos/ In the City of Angels/ In downtown Denver/ Chicago and Manhattan/ Mexico City and Milan/ Calcutta and Tokyo/ Drowned in the bad breath of machines/ The sun's wearing shades/ The ozone layer coughing smog/ The eco-system as finely balanced as a mobile/ A computer about to crash" (first stanza) A poem by Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021), the Great American poet, publisher & bookseller whose City Lights imprint was instrumental to the popularization of the Beat Generation, the San Francisco Renaissance-&-Beyond. A late-(in his exceptionally long)life lament on "A casino culture out of control" (second stanza, first line), the world-wizened product of decades of observation & activism. Smaller broadside folded into four panels, with printing on five sides, affixed to stiff wrappers. A production of Sore Dove Press, the imprint of Soheyl Dahi (b. 1954), the noted artist & publisher, "Published in an edition of 50 copies/ signed & numbered/ by the poet & the artist" per colophon, this is copy No. 45/50 as hand-written in pencil above colophon. At first panel title page, above his printed name & partially overlapping with upper black border line, Ferlinghetti has hand-written his signature (last name only as most-common) in bold black ink. The reference to the "artist" at colophon may refer to Ferlinghetti, who was an artist as well as a poet, although no artwork is reproduced here. Published as the twentieth number in the Sore Dove Press broadside Series as noted at colophon. An exceptionally scarce Ferlighetti collectible in its singularly rarest contemporary form.
