"Further Conversations with Don Juan" Excerpted from Esquire Magazine March 1971 Issue with: Hand-Written Notes, NYTBR Clipping
Chicago, IL: Esquire, Inc., 1971; 1978. First Printings; Manuscript Notes. Sheets in Bound Scrapbook-Portfolio. Including sheet of hand-written notes by Albert Glover. "Ten years ago I had the fortune of meeting a Yaqui Indian from Northwestern Mexico. I call him "don Juan." In Spanish, "don" is an appellative used to denote respect. I made don Juan's acquaintance under the most fortuitous circumstances. I was sitting with Bill, a friend of mine, in a bus depot in a border town in Arizona. We were very quiet. In the late afternoon the summer heat seemed unbearable. Suddenly he leaned over and tapped me on the shoulder." (first paragraph, "Further Conversations with Don Juan," Esquire: March 1971, pg. 75) A most interesting & significant hand-produced rarity: The pages from the Esquire Magazine issue of March 1971 containing the article "Further Conversations with Don Juan" by Carlos Castaneda (1925-1998), the controversial, probably at least partly fraudulent Peruvian-American anthropologist & author. His series of books beginning with The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge (1968) were a popular sensation for hippie-turned-new-age readers during the 1960s through the 1980s, but before the series was even finished controversy caught up with Castaneda about everything from his birth date, credentials & even the existence of Yacqui Shaman "don Juan." The pages are carefully bound into a scrapbook-portfolio bound in knitting thread with stiff paper covers, into the inner covers of which are affixed the back & front covers of the Esquire issue in reverse order. Partially affixed to inner front cover over back cover of the issue is a sheet with hand-written notes in black ink of a satirical/skeptical nature. Loosely included (circa 7 years later) between this & first page of the article is a clipping from the March 5, 1978 issue of the New York Times Book Review with a short article by Herbert Mitgang (1920-2013), the venerable longtime NYT editor & journalist. The article, in the NYTBR's "Behind the Best Sellers" series, is about Castaneda & the controversy surrounding him. This unique item is the work of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the acclaimed American poet, bibliographer, editor, publisher & academician who was the foremost remaining authority on Charles Olson (1910-1970), the Great Black Mountain-&-Beyond Poet's Poet who is our favorite Maximus Obscurantist. Glover was a student of & anointed by the Maximus Master himself at SUNY Buffalo during the 1960s, & ever since was the foremost Olsonian Torch-Bearer. We were honored to know Glover, & are deeply saddened at his recent passing. Glover's stylized ownership stamp graces the front cover of this production, & the notes referred to above were written in his hand. A one-of-a-kind Castaneda-Glover rarity of much interest to Third Mind scholar-collectors. See also our item No. 5169.
