San Antonio, TX: Pecan Grove Press, 2008. First Edition, First Printing. Softcover. Signed twice & inscribed by David Lazar for Dan Rzicznek. “From the moment I was born, I must have been my / father’s undoing. His mournful look in the photos as he / gazes down at my crib…the way he pulled his tie too / tight around his neck and then threw a last look—almost / skeptical—over his shoulder before he walked down the / dark passage that led to the street” (p. 1). A volume of poems by David Lazar (b. 1957), the American writer and editor from Brooklyn, NY who has done much for the development of creative nonfiction in graduate education in America. Lazar still teaches at Columbia College Chicago, where he mentors and markets young writers to great effect. His own writing in Powder Town certainly reflects this history and influence, and added to it is Lazar’s evident interest in Film Noir, the great American film genre, which he deploys masterfully in this collection. A durable assembly of poems by an underappreciated American writer and educator. Trade-format softcover original: First Edition, though not explicated as such on copyright page; First Printing, with no reference to previous editions or printings, thereon. From the collection of Dan Rzicznek (b. 1979), Ohio poet and professor at Bowling Green State University. Andrews’ signature and inscription to Rzicznek is found near top edge of title page in thin, blue ink and reads: “David Lazar / for Dan, / In fellowship / and thanks for a wonderful / anthology — all best, / David.” Book in strong fine condition with only minute-to-moderate shelf-wear, rubbing, and some light bumping to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers & spine-edge; otherwise, generally clean. Fine. [Item #8937]
