An American Century of Photography: From Dry-Plate to Digital (Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged) with: Ephemera
ISBN: 0810963787
Kansas City, MO, USA: Hallmark Cards, Inc., 1999. Second Edition. Hardcover. "This is the most comprehensive study ever attempted of a vast important subject: the modern era of American photography from the mid-1880s to the present. Lavishly illustrated, and printed to the highest technical standards in both tritone and full color, this authoritative volume presents a new perspective on the history of American photography that will be of interest to general audiences and scholars alike. Based in large part on photography's own literature, and supplemented with detailed source notes, it emphasizes the relationship between artists and aesthetic movements, and the intellectual and cultural climate in which photographers work." (from front flap) An American Century of Photography was originally published in 1995, and this second edition is "nearly 50 percent larger than the first" with newly revised text and additional artists and images. The industry has progressed from the dry-plate technology of the late nineteenth and early 20th centuries to the digital age of today, and there have been several eras of development and innovation along the way that have revolutionized the artistry and technique of professional photography. The images throughout this volume range from portraits to wartime, from rural and urban scenes to visual abstractions, and the artists are the most influential examples of their respective eras' newest innovations. A fascinating volume for anyone's perusal! Also included: a letter on Hallmark Cards stationary dated February 17, 1999, from Keith Davis to Terry Etherton of the Etherton Gallery in Tucson, AZ, acknowledging her support and presenting her with a copy of the book in anticipation of its release; a booklet catalog of the acquisitions of the Hallmark Art and Photographic Collections for the year 2000.
