The Floating Bear: A Newsletter No. 32 (1966)

This vintage later number of the legendary literary journal then-published & edited by Diane di Prima (1934-2020, the most primary figure among the sparse female members of the original Beat Generation) was guest-edited by Kirby Doyle (1932-2003) “on occasion of his historic stay in New York City,” as di Prima, herself says near the end of the issue. It features poems by Michael McClure (1932-2020), Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) and several notable others, and features a cover by Bob Branaman (1933-2024), the legendary outrider artist affiliated with the Beat Generation and San Francisco Renaissance. In addition to these Beat giants, there are poems by a selection of English Romantic masters, including the doomed Thomas Chatterton (1752-1770) and John Keats (1795-1821). A classic issue of a key Beat periodical. From the collection of Albert Glover (1942-2026), the esteemed American poet, editor, publisher & academician who was the foremost remaining authority on Charles Olson (1910-1970). Glover was a student of & anointed by the Maximus Master himself at SUNY Buffalo during the 1960s, & had ever since served outstandingly to bear the Olsonian Torch as bibliographer, editor & publisher. Glover passed away during February of 2026, & we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family. Mimeographed magazine in stapled wrappers: the First-&-only Printing of this issue of The Floating Bear. In strong near fine condition minute-to-moderate shelf-wear, some age-toning & a few tiny bumps & creases at/from corners of sheets; a few small exhibits of rusting & bleeding below staple at recto first sheet/front cover & verso final sheet/rear cover; one mild horizontal crease across middle of sheets where once-folded; sparse crease-indentations at varying locales throughout; 2/3 of bottommost fold at verso cut from issue (removing the addressee below the postmark and return address) but seemingly no text affected; otherwise, generally clean.
