Original Concert Postcard: Chuck Berry, Eric Burden & the Animals, Steve Miller Band (Fillmore, June 27- July 2, 1967)

San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1967. Limited Edition. Single Sheet. This postcard announces a six-concert series produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991) during June 27- July 2, 1967 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco with performances headlined by Chuck Berry, along with Eric Burden & the Animals & the Steve Miller Blues Band. The brilliant American poster, underground comix & animation artist Greg Irons (b. Gregory Rodman Irons, 1947-1984) created the artwork & graphics reproduced here, & "Poster by Greg Irons" in facsimile hand-lettering is found just above black image border-line near lower left corner (see image). Credited for "Lights" is the aptly named Headlights, the pioneering psychedelic light show group led by Glenn McKay (b. 1936). About the design, Eric King writes in his Collector's Guide: "The central image is the back of the head of a man wearing a bowler hat. There is a small, rickety staircase going up the side of the hat leading to a tiny gazebo in which a tiny woman is standing. A large poisonous snake rises above her. This is the first Fillmore poster created by the late Greg Irons whose untimely accidental death in Bangkok, Thailand was a great loss to the artistic community." (BG-70-OPC-A, pg. 409) A dazzling, whimsical production by the great Irons (whose animation work included the Beatles' film Yellow Submarine) from 1967's "Summer of Love" itself. Single sheet (appx. 4 & 1/2" x 7 & 1/4"): first-&-only printing (of the individual card; two variations of a double card were also printed) with all points in King including the "Place Stamp Here" verso. In relatively fine-to-very-fine condition with only mild age-toning to white margins and verso and very slight bumping to the fine edges and corners. Fine-Very Fine. [Item #8995]
