HARM

Norwalk, CT: Easton Press, 2007. Limited First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Signed by Brian W. Aldiss "Authority ordained it. Lesser authoritarians carried out its orders. No nation ever lacks those who will carry out orders. The man this tale concerns was taken into custody. There had been a carefree time for foolishness, but that time was gone. This was the time for seriousness, for a war against terror. A Nation's security was at stake." (first paragraph, pg. 3) A later classic dystopian/Orwellian science fiction novel by Brian W(ilson) Aldiss (1925-2017), the canonical, much-honored, astoundingly prolific British novelist & short story author. Offered here is the limited first edition published by the Easton Press- an exemplary, quite sumptuous EP production bound in dark red leather with gilt letters & illustrations at covers & spine, gilt edges, silken paste-downs, endpapers & attached ribbon-bookmark. One of 1000 copies hand-numbered & signed by Aldiss in blue ink at recto special page leaf opposite verso front endpaper, this is copy No. 111/1000. Also present, between front paste-down & endpaper, are: (1) Small card entitled "a note about/ HARM..." at recto with capsule biography of Aldiss & this short description of this volume at verso: "In Brian Aldiss' new novel, HARM, a British author of Muslim descent is arrested and tortured because of a satirical novel in which characters joke about assassinating the Prime Minister. On the remote and harsh planet of Stygia, a struggling colonist, Fremant, is haunted by memories of torture- torture much like that of the imprisoned author. What connects the two men- and what does it mean? HARM is a provocative and deeply resonant fable for our times from one of science fiction's greatest living authors." (2) "Certificate of Authenticity" sheet printed on one side only, with facsimile signatures of Aldiss, a witness & the publisher, dated "11 February '07." An essential later Aldiss collectible- cautionary, imaginative, resonant & rewarding- in its very rarest form, beautifully signed by the revered late author. In very fine condition, appearing substantially mint inside & out, including loose items described above. Very Fine. [Item #9043]
